Breast reduction surgery, also known as reduction mammoplasty, removes skin, fat, and glandular tissue from the breasts to make them smaller and more proportionate.

The plastic surgeon also reshapes them, raising the nipples into the youthful position.

This procedure may reduce back and neck pain and facilitate greater enjoyment of physical activities.

Breast reduction procedure

Some fat, skin and glands are removed during the surgery, not only breasts themselves are reduced, but also nipple areola if it is  too large. Breast reduction is performed by an anchor-shaped incision following the natural contour of the breast.

During the surgery, the surgeon removes excess skin and breast tissue, repositions the nipple and the areola to their anatomical location on the breast, and reshapes the breasts into a more esthetic shape.

The surgery is completed by placing the drains, which are removed the next day after the surgery. Wound stitched and put on a special bra. 

Breast reduction Post Op

Bandages over the surgical sites should be changed every 2–3 days. Patients are strongly advised to wear a special surgical bra  24 hours per day for the next 5-6 weeks and to avoid sports and other physical activities.

The patient can return to work within a few days if  occupation does not require strenuous movements and arm raising.

Breast reduction recovery

Breast reduction is a common procedure that will take about eight weeks to recover from, although your treatment timeline will depend on your health and how well you follow post-operative instructions. You’ll need to wear support or compression bras for several weeks during your recovery period.
