Gastric bypass
Gastric bypass is a surgical procedure in which a portion of the stomach is removed and an artificial stomach with a small pouch is attached to it.
The procedure allows people with obesity to lose weight, improve their health and reduce the risk of certain life-threatening diseases. This procedure is also called a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass.
If you are obese and have other health problems, and have tried hard to lose weight by dieting and doing more exercise, you might be a good candidate for a gastric bypass surgery to help with weight loss.
Gastric bypass surgery is a very effective type of surgery for weight loss. Losing weight after gastric bypass surgery can help reduce problems with type 2 diabetes, asthma episodes and blood pressure, and can help improve heart health.
During a face-lift, a flap of skin on each side of the face is pulled back. Tissues below the skin are altered, and excess skin is removed. This gives the face a more youthful shape.

Gastric Bypass Procedure
Gastric bypass surgery is performed under general anesthetic and will probably involve a hospital stay of 3 to 5 days. You will have general anesthesia before this surgery. You will be asleep and pain-free.
Gastric bypass can be done in two ways. The surgery is usually done as a keyhole procedure, but sometimes an open operation is needed.
With open surgery, your surgeon makes a large surgical cut to open your belly. The bypass is done by working on your stomach, small intestine, and other organs.
Another way to do this surgery is to use a tiny camera, called a laparoscope. This camera is placed in your belly. The surgery is called laparoscopy. The scope allows the surgeon to see inside your belly.
During the procedure, staples are used to create a small pouch in the top part of the stomach, as the image below shows.
The pouch is attached by stitches to the lower part of the small intestine so food will bypass most of the stomach and the first part of the small intestine. The food you eat will now travel from the pouch into this new opening and into your small intestine. As a result, your body will absorb fewer calories.
Less food will be absorbed into the body and you will feel full after eating only a small amount.
Gastric Bypass Post Op
If you have had gastric bypass surgery, you will start on liquid food only. After a few weeks, you will start eating pureed food and then solids.
A dietitian will advise you on how you can change your eating habits after gastric bypass surgery to keep healthy while losing weight.
You will also need to take vitamin and mineral supplements for life to replace those normally absorbed in the first part of the small intestine.
For the first month, you will only be able to handle small amounts of soft food and liquids. But gradually, you will be able to add solid foods back into your diet. You will notice feeling full very quickly – after eating about two tablespoons of food. Your physician may also recommend that you take nutritional supplements.
Within the first two years, you can expect to lose one-half to two-thirds of your excess body weight. Weight loss will continue, in most cases, for a year and a half before stabilizing.
Gastric Bypass Recovery
You can usually go home from the hospital 1 to 3 days after having weight loss surgery. After 4 to 6 weeks, you’ll be able to return to your normal activities. However, you’ll need to make long-term lifestyle changes in order to help make the most of your surgery.
